Boyd Simpson, a Hanna resident and historian buff, knew his uncle, a retired air flight controller, was coming to town in the coming week, so he wanted to find the foundation for airplane beacons he knew was near the town.

Comet 12P Pons-Brooks is gracing the northern skies this month for stargazers and amateur astronomers alike. Better-equipped astronomers and observatories have been able to see it for the past six months. It was last seen in 1954 over 70 years ago.

Nineteen events are scheduled to recruit local talent for 50 positions.

The Rocky Mountain Region of the USDA Forest Service is hiring 50 entry-level, permanent seasonal wildland firefighters to work on engine, hotshot, helitack, and handcrews across forests and grasslands in Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wyoming.

There is a fundraiser that just celebrated its 24th year. This event is held each February in memory of a local resident, Ben Romious, age 21, who was killed in an avalanche while snowmobiling on Battle Pass near Battle Lake in January 1998.

Cory Nunn, one of the main organizers who is with Search and Rescue, said the poker run this year was successful.

The weather in Carbon County is not like last year at this time. Snow, cold and wind seemed relentless. Roads were closed often and people in their communities found themselves trapped for days on end. This year, recent days have been in the high 30s or low 40s.
