For decades, a population of grouse in south-central Wyoming and northwest Colorado has been identified as Columbian sharp-tailed grouse, the same subspecies that can be found in far western Wyoming near Jackson along with Idaho, northern Utah and parts of the Pacific Northwest.

On June 28, on Greg Ryan’s property outside Saratoga, with views of the North Platte River meandering by, three trailers were set up to operate on the airwaves.

“It is great atmospheric conditions,” said Jay Duthler, one of the amateur operators. “This plateau was empty a little over 24 hours ago. You can start setting up 24 hours before the competition.”

The Medicine Bow National Forest is seeking public input this summer on the ongoing implementation of the Medicine Bow Landscape Vegetation Analysis Project, also known as LaVA. Forest officials announced they will accept comments and feedback through several methods in June and July, with input most helpful if received by July 15.

All National Forest System roads on the Pole Mountain unit of the Medicine Bow National Forest are now open for public motorized travel. Roads began opening in stages this past week with public safety and natural resource sustainability taken into consideration.

Wyoming Department of Transportation

Wyoming Department of Transportation maintenance crews reopened the seasonally-closed section of Wyoming Highway 70 today for the summer season.

Crews from Saratoga and Baggs started work on the 23-mile stretch of highway in early May, using multiple rotary plows and other heavy equipment to clear large drifts of snow.

On February 27, two men hunting in Green Mountain got into trouble. Their names were Jay and Lenny, but their last names are unknown. They were barely able to make a 911 call, and there has been no contact since that initial call. It appears they may be separated as well.

The 2025 Wyoming High School Cross Nordic Ski Championships will occur on the Tie City/Happy Jack trail system, February 28 and March 1. The races are permitted by the Medicine Bow National Forest.

On January 25, Colorado State University graduate students Thomas Lawrence and Bonnie Johnson came to Rawlins to share the findings from the research that they did in Carbon County over the summer. 

“We’ll be presenting what we learned from the community interviews and survey results about wind energy development and outdoor recreation in Carbon County,” Johnson said.
