As winter blankets the High Lonesome region, the promise of sunshine and camaraderie lures both seasoned anglers and outdoor enthusiasts to Saratoga Lake for the 40th Annual Ice Fishing Derby. This timeless tradition harkens back to ancient times when tribes along the northern hemisphere sought fresh meat to sustain them through the dark, winter months.

Rawlins Downtown Development Authority (DDA)/Main Street is seeking Community Public Artwork for the Creative Hands Community Art Banners Program to hang on the City-owned light poles in the downtown as a public art and beautification project for the City of Rawlins according to Pam Thayer, Director of DDA.

Thayer said this is the third year.

Wyoming in winter can have some cold days, with winds making the wind chill factor drop the temperature by as much as 20 degrees F. It is brutal for humans and wildlife to cope with on certain days.

Last year was one of the worst winters many residents of Carbon County had gone through. From Halloween until the second week of May, it snowed every week, sometimes several times during the week.

This year, there have been a few storms and cold weather, but nothing like what it was like last year.

This past week that all changed.

Consistent with direction from President Biden in Executive Order 14072 to conserve and restore old and mature forests, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced a proposal to amend all 128 forest land management plans to conserve and steward old-growth forest conditions on national forests and grasslands nationwide.

Winter timber hauling activity in the northern Snowy Range will necessitate temporary closure of several snowmobile trails by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service from December 15, 2023, to April 15, 2024.

Snowy Range Scenic Byway, WYO 130, closes for winter season

The scenic Snowy Range Scenic Byway, also known as WYO 130, officially closed for the winter season on November 26, 2023, according to an announcement made by the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT). The closure, an annual occurrence, is due to drifting and blowing snow, making road conditions unsafe and plowing impractical.
