The first team that the Little Snake River Valley (LSRV) High School basketball team faced at the state championships in Casper was last year’s State 1A Champion, Lingle-Ft. Laramie.
Head Coach Joel Thomas liked the challenge of playing this team because they had not lost a game to a 1A team in over two years.
Clay Evans, head coach of the Little Snake River Valley (LSRV) High School girls basketball team had a great season with his team, even though the Lady Rattlers did not take the championship when they played.
“Our first game was against Lingle-Ft. Laramie in the opening round and it was a burner,” Evans said. “We won 69 to 65 and it really was a fun game.”
The Rawlins Outlaws saw their season come to an end at the regional basketball tournament despite strong efforts from both the boys and girls teams.
The Outlaws opened regional play March 5 against No. 3 seed Douglas. Douglas controlled the game offensively and came away with an 85-50 win over No. 6 seed Rawlins.
Jason Williams, head coach for the Saratoga Panther High School basketball team, had hopes of winning the State Championship at the beginning of the season, like all coaches in 1A. He knew the Panther team had talent, but so did other teams.
The State Championship for Wrestling is over. Carbon County had some wrestlers not only place but also take the gold. Several placed first. Rusty Arnold, Head Coach for the Saratoga team, was elated. He had wrestlers place, including his son Ace, who placed first in the 106 weight class.
The wrestling season is winding down. On February 20, the Regionals for wrestling started. The lady wrestlers from Carbon County all wrestled at Douglas.
Two girls from Carbon County placed 1st. One came from Carbon County School District No 1 (CCSD1) and the other came from Carbon County School District No 2. (CCSD2)
The Tigers lost against Little Snake River Valley (LSRV) on February 21 by a score of 71 to 55. The Encampment team has had a difficult season due to injuries of key players. The game against LSRV was the last game for the Tigers of the season.
Saratoga High School hosted seven teams at the Carbon County Wrestling Invite on February 13.
The Carbon County wrestling teams from Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM), Rawlins and Saratoga were in attendance along with Big Piney, Dubois, Glenrock and Niobrara County.
Jesse Solaas, Head Coach for HEM was happy to have his team attend the Invite.
The mats were busy and the gym was loud as seven teams converged for the Rawlins Rumble in Wrestling, and when the final dual wrapped up, the Rawlins Outlaws had done what they set out to do — defend their home mat with authority.
Joel Moline, a social studies teacher at Rawlins Middle School and also a coach there and at Rawlins High School, started teaching and working out with weights in the summer three years ago.
His first year of doing this, he had boys and girls together.
Both Carbon County School Districts have reason to be happy with their wrestling programs.
Saratoga and Rawlins High School wrestling teams went to Ron Thon, the biggest tournament in Wyoming and faced 38 girls wrestling teams and 39 boys wrestling teams.
