On Saturday, July 26, the Grand Encampment Museum welcomed visitors to step back in time for its annual Living History Day, where the scent of wood smoke and homemade ice cream mingled with the clang of antique machinery and the laughter of children in a stick horse rodeo.

Tina Hill, Director of the historic Wyoming Frontier Prison in Rawlins, was happy with how successful the ‘Sunset in the Slammer’ was going as people turned up for disc golf, food trucks, vendors, music and of course, tours of the prison.

The event has turned into an annual celebration, but according to Hill, it actually started because of another event.

It has been a long time coming. Years in fact. The Fossil Cabin Museum near Como Bluff, only a few miles outside the town of Medicine Bow, is getting closer to its new home at the Medicine Bow Museum. As of July 23, the foundations were started.

The garage, sometimes overlooked, but definitely should not be, is now housing a mammoth skull.

The Grand Encampment Museum (GEM) kicked off its 2025 summer season on May 24 with a flurry of activity, including a book signing with bestselling author C.J. Box, field trips for local students, and the unveiling of a new mural.

The Elk Mountain Hotel played host to an Elk Mountain Museum event that is now in its third year. Elk Mountain Museum Director Angie Hobbs was giving a talk on a woman who settled in the area and made a difference. This year her subject was Mary Jane Morely Stimpson Richardson.

One of the great things about working in a museum is the discovery of small things that highlight the beauty of history. The other day, I received a call here at the museum about one of the local churches in town. The Chapel Car Bible Church on 12th St. holds within its walls the very chapel car that carried God’s word to the west.

Saratoga Museum

The Saratoga Museum is excited to announce that the highly anticipated 2025 Frozen Fore Ice Golf Tournament has been rescheduled for June 21, 2025, at the Saratoga Hot Springs Resort and Spa. Originally planned for February, the event was postponed due to unsafe ice conditions caused by unseasonably warm temperatures. Now, the tournament is back with a summer spin.
