Cherry season is just about over, but if you come across a great sale on them, there is a cocktail from days gone by, that will put those pitted little fruits to good use.

One of the few recipes known to have been used by George Washington in his early years was a cocktail that was brandy-based, called the Cherry Bounce.

The Platte Valley Ministerial Association is hosting a Beans (with ham) and Rice Banquet on  Tuesday, October 10th from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall of St. Ann’s Church. The dinner is a fundraising event for the Saratoga Food Pantry. Admission is by donation. All are welcome.

There is something satisfying about planting seeds and a month or so later, having plants spring forth. This year was my first attempt to raise a tomato from a seed. In the past, I have usually grabbed starter tomato plants and been happy with my bounty.  

My families–divorced parents, always had gardens.

Tomatoes were a major crop.

A green drink is not usually taken seriously by serious cocktail drinkers. However, there is a green drink which has celebrated its 100th birthday and has a bit of history.

It is the Grasshopper.

This green cocktail is credited to being created at Tujuague’s in New Orleans. It is traceable because the drink was invented in a competition.

I have made a lot of cocktails in my life. Many have been classics forgotten for the most part, many have been standard drinks you see in every venue serving alcohol. I have created a few signature ones too. Bourbon Mai Tai is one of my favorites, but it is not my actual favorite.

It is great to use to help dye eggs at Easter, clean glass and is great in cooking. It helps add acid to certain foods.

It is not as common as it once was to have homemade treats. Grabbing a box mix for cakes and brownies at the grocery store, especially when there are so many varieties available, has become the norm. 

The first cake mix was Betty Crocker’s Ginger Cake mix in 1947. Brownies, however, have been around much longer.
