Pasta Pie

By Mike Armstrong

I would never have thought of this dish even though I really enjoy pasta.

It is a pasta pie.

I discovered this when I lived in Noosa, Australia.

We did not serve this at the restaurant I worked at, but there were a lot of cafes in this town and all were trying to outdo the other with their contemporary fare although a lot was based on old-world cooking.

Campari’s Journey from Bittersweet Beginnings to a Billion-Dollar Empire

By Mike Armstrong

When I first saw a bottle of Campari, it looked like maybe it would be a raspberry or strawberry flavor since the color was so deeply red.

The taste is nothing like either.

It is very bitter.

It is made from 27 herbs. It runs about 42 to 57 proof. The proof depends on where you buy it.

My first taste had me almost spit it out.

We have visited many countries in this article and sampled a number of their foods.  But we have yet to go to India.  If you like a saucy spice this is a great way to go.  Now there are many different styles of curry, but we are going to look at Indian Curry.

Finding a Good Taste for a Better Price

There are some liqueurs in the marketplace that might have an imitation, but their imitator doesn’t cut it.

An example is Midori, the melon liqueur made by Suntory.

The imitators such as Dekuyper Melon Liqueur have a very weak taste in comparison to the original.

Dekuyper has some great products but their melon flavor is not one of them.

Honey of a Cocktail

I am a fan of a cocktail that came from the years of prohibition. It is the Bee’s Knees. During its inception, the speakeasies in the cities were doing their best to serve drinks that were high-class and worth paying for. The problem was, that many of the spirits being used were not all that great in quality.

There are many ways of saving money. As stated in the last article, keeping some things on hand is one of the main ways, this allows you to buy the items on sale and store them until needed. Doing some of your own canning and freezing also helps.

The Colada

In my very early bartending days, I had to learn a lot of specialty drinks to make which tested my endurance on the blender.

We had six blenders set up for ice cream drinks and two for Coladas. We did the Pina Colada, Strawberry Colada and the Melon Colada.

A New Look Means Everything

I have been fortunate in a lot of my jobs where I get to learn cool things. In the liquor business, there is a success story about a brand that is amazing in how it demonstrates what marketing can do.

I tell this story often if I have the right audience in a bar.

It usually comes up when Fireball is being drunk.

When it comes to alcohol, my expertise is really on hard spirits, but it doesn’t mean that I don’t have an interest in beer or wine.

Celebrating the Martini

I always say my father got on me on the road to bartending. He had me and my sister making him his “I just got home drink” when he came back from the office. Back in the day, this was standard practice to have a drink to unwind from the day. My stepmother usually joined him. They would have one drink before dinner and sometimes a nightcap. The nightcaps were usually his domain.
