You know those advertisements you see for leftover pallets from big box department stores for only $79.99? 

Well, my curiosity got the better of me. I ordered one. 

I was beginning to think it was a scam because it had been so long since I placed the order but then it was delivered Monday, only it wasn’t a pallet.

Our first paper came out this past week, and although I am very proud of what Dana, Keith and I produced, there were a few errors and I found myself cringing each time I came across a mistake. A word misspelled can change context.

Like any kid in America, I loved Christmas. It was a special holiday with both of my folks. Also, it was one of the cool times to have divorced parents. The Armstrongs and Vanderoefs celebrated Christmas with great dinners and a lot of holiday cheer. No such thing as a fake tree in either home.

Winter is coming to Carbon County although this November was fairly mild compared to last year. I remember shoveling the sidewalks at the Hanna Recreation Center almost non-stop during November and December in 2022.

The ugly sweater can be a fun article of clothing. Perfect for the informal Christmas gathering or something to wear after a long day in the winter outdoors after the cold sets deeply in the bones. The Christmas Sweater can be very useful if the shopper knows what to look for.

I had a great Thanksgiving day, not counting having to cut dinner short because of the weather conditions worsening as the day wore on.

The swirling snow covering the roads made the drive from Medicine Bow back to Hanna a bit treacherous, but I had taken my time and all was good. 

Given that last year we had already had four to five snow storms by this time, I really can’t complain about the storm we got on Thanksgiving although it did delay the distribution of the Comet.

A man asks his granddaughter if she has a newspaper.

“Grandpa, I haven’t bought a newspaper or magazine in years.”

“I just...” he started before she interrupted.

“Here, use my iPad.”

He takes the iPad and smashes the spider that was crawling on the footstool.

Most everybody has memories of going to their grandparents for the holidays; long days of running outdoors, playing in the snow building snow forts and having snowball fights. The games could go on for hours. Sometimes the game could go on until well after dark. ‘Ghost In The Graveyard’ was a favorite game that lasted until well past dark.

My Thanksgiving growing up was fairly typical except for spending every other holiday with my different parents. I lived with my father, so although turkey day at the Armstrongs was good, my mother went all out when it was her turn to have us. Not so much with the meal itself, but the deserts. Homemade cakes and pies were given and delicious. She did everything from scratch whereas my stepmother, God rest her soul, did mostly box and can dishes.

As we pass Halloween and move into the winter, we watch as the trees are stripped to their skeletons, we watch the world around us transform to its skeletal form, often clad in white. But why is this time of the year so ascribed to death and the darker orders of human nature?

I have been asked to write about my travels and living in other countries since starting the Carbon County Comet. I have a couple of times, but not until I wrote “Its a Small World”, last week did I become inspired to do a column called “The Carbon County Traveler”.

My sister and I were fortunate kids in that our father took us to Disney World at least once a year when we were growing up. We went to Florida often because he worked for NASA and back in the day, there were a lot of launches to space. He wanted us to see them and Disney World was just a bonus.
