Saratoga, July 22, 2023 - The Saratoga Volunteer Fire Department (SVFD) celebrated a momentous milestone as they marked their 100th anniversary with a day of festivities, fond memories, and heartfelt gratitude. The community came together at the Platte Valley Community Center to honor the brave firefighters who have dedicated their lives to serving and protecting the town of Saratoga.
The event kicked off with a burst of excitement as firemen engaged in water wars with gleeful children in the parking lot of the community center. Laughter and splashes filled the air as the young ones teamed up with their local heroes, creating memories that will be cherished for a lifetime.
As the evening commenced, attendees gathered to witness a special video presentation featuring Brad Cary interviewing the venerable Don Herold, a spry 93-year-old who served as a volunteer fireman for two years before taking the helm as the fire chief in 1955, a position he held for an impressive 45 years. Herold regaled the audience with captivating stories and milestones, recounting the years of his life based on the fire truck he had at the time. The video encapsulated the essence of Herold and the SVFD’s dedication and commitment to the SVFD, leaving more than a few eyes misty with gratitude.
“Think of all the great stories we’ll never know; it was great to hear even a few,” shared an SVFD member, highlighting the rich history and experiences that have shaped the department over the years.
The celebration also welcomed esteemed guests, including Carbon County Chairwoman, Sue Jones.
The evening was made even more special with a delectable dinner catered by Marie Christen of Sweet Marie’s. The delightful spread provided the perfect fuel for reminiscing about the good old days and rekindling friendships among past and present firefighters.
The SVFD’s commitment to the community was further commemorated with music from local favorite, Rim Rock, setting the perfect backdrop for heartfelt conversations and anecdotes.
As the night progressed, attendees delved into cherished memories and stories from the past. One notable topic of discussion was the old Fireman’s Hall, a place that had witnessed countless joyous dances that lasted late into the night, even resulting in the conception of many beloved Saratoga residents. The bittersweet nostalgia of the hall was heightened as Cary shared that Teense Wilford was upset when the building had to be demolished due to asbestos and other issues, wondering how Saratoga would keep up the population.
The event also saw touching tributes to the brave firefighters who have passed away, including Ray Mitwalski, who made a unique request to be buried in his uniform, a testament to his dedication to the SVFD.
At present, the Saratoga Volunteer Fire Department boasts a steadfast team of 32 members, with Pat Waliser serving as the fire chief and Tom Westring as the assistant fire chief. The anniversary celebration drew firefighters from across the state, who came together to honor the SVFD’s remarkable achievement and extend their gratitude for their service.
The 100th anniversary of the Saratoga Volunteer Fire Department was a day of laughter, and reflection—a testament to the impact these selfless individuals have had on the community over the last century. As Saratoga looks back on its history with pride, the future is bright with the knowledge that the spirit of volunteerism and heroism continues to thrive within the hearts of these dedicated firefighters.
