A free dementia education event is coming to Saratoga this month. The public is invited to attend the presentation called “Understanding Brain Changes & Dementia” at the Platte Valley Community Center on August 21st at 2 p.m. The event is hosted by the North Platte Valley Medical Center and the UW - Wyoming Center on Aging.
More than 10,000 Wyomingites aged 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. About 16,000 Wyomingites are caregivers to a family member with the disease.
Dr. Kyle S. Page will deliver the upcoming presentation. The public can expect to learn about the difference between normal brain change and dementia, the different types of dementia including Alzheimer’s disease, and strategies to promote brain health.
Dr. Page is a geropsychologist in the Chicagoland area. Dr. Page holds board certification in geropsychology from the American Board of Professional Psychology and specializes in geriatric mental health. In his professional role, he provides psychotherapy and assessment to older adults in long-term care and physical rehabilitation.
In addition, Dr. Page offers continuing education to health care providers on a range of geriatric mental health topics. Dr. Page is committed to improving the care of older adults, and in this pursuit has served as a member of various interdisciplinary teams developing educational material for healthcare and legal professionals.
Publishing several book chapters and articles on later life mental health, Dr. Page also serves on the editorial board for the Clinical Gerontologist. Dr. Page earned his doctorate in psychology with an emphasis on aging and mental health from the University of North Texas and completed a clinical psychology fellowship with emphasis in geropsychology at the VA Boston Health Care System.
“This is such an important topic. We’re grateful to be able to bring this training to the community,” said Tami Hobson, Director of Nursing at the North Platte Valley Medical Center. Hobson works with geriatric residents in the extended care department. “It can be really beneficial to have this type of knowledge when it comes to caring for aging loved ones, or even yourself.”
