Before the days of the internet and cable television, cards were a popular pastime to be enjoyed by friends and family in the evening before bed.

Bridge clubs were common from the 1940s to the 1970s. Spades was another popular game and then there was Pinochle, a game not quite as complicated as Bridge, but more complex than Spades.
